Walter Koenig, who played Ensign Pavel Chekov on the original Star Trek and in its first seven movies, has died of natural causes at 90, his representative said.

Story Highlights

  • Koenig died Sunday, October 25, at his home in North Hollywood, his representative said.
  • His representative said he died of old age, with his daughter and niece at his side.
  • He played Chekov in 36 episodes of the original series and in seven films from 1979 to 1991.
  • He was reportedly cast as Chekov in part because he looked like Davy Jones of the Monkees.
  • Later fans knew him as the villain Alfred Bester on the 1990s space series Babylon 5.
  • Co-star George Takei called him “a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend.”

Representative Confirms His Passing

Zachery McGinnis, Koenig’s talent representative, announced the death in a statement. He said Koenig “passed of old age at home in North Hollywood,” surrounded by his daughter and niece. Koenig had turned 90 on September 14.

“Thank you, Walter, for the memories, the inspiration, and for boldly going where few have gone before,” McGinnis said. He added that Koenig “understood what Star Trek meant to people and embraced the community that grew around it.”

From Chicago To The Bridge Of The Enterprise

Koenig was born in Chicago to Russian Jewish immigrants, and his family later moved to Manhattan. He studied pre-med at Grinnell College in Iowa, then earned a psychology degree at UCLA. A professor pushed him toward acting, and he went on to train at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York alongside James Caan and Christopher Lloyd.

In 1963 he played a sergeant on NBC’s The Lieutenant, a military drama from Gene Roddenberry, who later created Star Trek. Koenig joined Star Trek at the start of its second season as Chekov, the young Russian navigator of the starship Enterprise. He appeared in 36 of the 50 episodes that aired in the second and third seasons, and he was reportedly cast in part because he looked like Davy Jones of the Monkees. He went on to play Chekov in the first seven Star Trek movies, released from 1979 through 1991.

A Second Act On Babylon 5

In the 1990s, Koenig found a new generation of fans as Alfred Bester on Babylon 5, a science-fiction TV series. Bester was a scheming character, far from the eager young Chekov.

Koenig also wrote. He penned films, one-act plays and TV episodes, and in 1980 he published a Star Trek book, Chekov’s Enterprise. On stage, he toured in The Boys in Autumn, playing a middle-aged Tom Sawyer who meets up again with Huckleberry Finn.

A Friend To The Crew And The Fans

George Takei, his co-star on the original series, honored his friend of nearly six decades. “Walter was more than Chekov. He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend,” Takei wrote. In 2008, Koenig was the best man at Takei’s wedding.

Koenig married Judy Levitt in 1965. She died in 2022. Their son, Andrew, died in 2010. Their daughter is Danielle. For millions of families who watched the Enterprise crew stand together through every crisis, Chekov was part of growing up, and that is a legacy few actors ever get.
