Flowers Foods is recalling two sizes of Nature’s Own Hawaiian Bread in five states because the label leaves off milk, a hidden danger for anyone with a milk allergy, the company said in a notice dated Friday, October 2. No illnesses have been reported.

Story Snapshot

  • What to look for: Nature’s Own Hawaiian Bread, 20-ounce bag (UPC 0 72250 91662 2) with best-by dates from Oct. 08, 2026 to Oct. 18, 2026
  • Also recalled: Nature’s Own 2-pack Hawaiian Bread, 40 ounces (UPC 0 72250 00683 5); the notice lists no best-by dates or product codes for this pack
  • Where it was sold: Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas
  • Who is at risk: people with a milk allergy or severe milk sensitivity
  • Illnesses: the company says none have been reported

How To Spot The Recalled Bread

The 20-ounce bag carries the UPC (the bar code number) 0 72250 91662 2. The affected bags show a best-by date (the “use by” date printed on the bag) from OCT 08 2026 to OCT 18 2026. The company notice lists a full set of production codes for the 20-ounce bag, which are printed near the date. The 40-ounce 2-pack has the UPC 0 72250 00683 5. The notice gives no dates or codes for that pack, so check the bar code.

The bread went to stores in Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. The recall is limited to these products and states.

Why Milk On The Label Matters

Federal law requires food makers to list milk on the label because even a small amount can cause a serious reaction in someone who is allergic. When a food has milk in it but the label does not say so, it is called an undeclared allergen. A person with a milk allergy has no way to know the risk by reading the bag.

Flowers Foods said the mistake came to light when it reviewed its production records and found that certain packages did not list milk as an ingredient. The company said the recall is being made with the knowledge of the Food and Drug Administration. The notice does not say how many loaves are affected.

What To Do With The Bread

Check any Nature’s Own Hawaiian Bread at home against the sizes, bar codes and dates above. The company says to throw the bread away or return it to the store where it was bought for a full refund. Anyone with a milk allergy should not eat it.

Someone who ate the bread and has symptoms such as hives, swelling, wheezing or stomach pain should get medical help. Questions can go to the Flowers Foods Consumer Relations Center at 1-866-245-8921, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern. As of Sunday, October 4, no change to the recall has been reported.
