(USNewsBreak.com) – It’s no secret that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ (R) campaign has suffered several setbacks. First, there were troubles with his staff members. Then, the super PAC supporting DeSantis, Never Back Down, started struggling, too, with several notable players resigning or facing termination. On December 18, the Campaign Legal Center, a nonprofit watchdog, filed a complaint alleging DeSantis and Never Back Down had illegally colluded. Now, a PAC supporting former US Ambassador Nikki Haley has put the Florida leader in its crosshairs.

On December 19, Stand For America INC (SFA) released a video ad targeting DeSantis on X, formerly Twitter, saying that the Florida governor is losing support, staff, and donors. It shows a slow zoom to a dumpster on fire while splashing the screen with broadcasters’ comments about his plummeting campaign. The pundits say snippets like, “Support for Ron DeSantis is plummeting” and “Republican voters are just not that into DeSantis.”

DeSantis’ campaign fired back and said Haley was simply setting herself up to become former President Donald Trump’s running mate. The former South Carolina governor has said she would not accept the position if Trump offered it to her. Haley has remained adamant that she doesn’t “play for second.” It’s unclear who, if anyone, Trump has slated as his second-in-command should he win.
DeSantis still trails the former president by significant margins in national and local polls. According to FiveThirtyEight, Trump (62%) has a 50.1% lead over DeSantis (11.9%) as of December 22. Haley is a close third with 10.8%, and she has continued to gain traction in the polls lately. The Iowa Primary poll shows Trump leading by more than 30 percentage points as of the same date. Both candidates have a lot of work to do to win the nomination, which currently seems headed toward a Trump win despite his ongoing legal troubles.
