(USNewsBreak.com) – When a criminal appears in court, the judge has the power to sentence them accordingly. However, a man who recently pleaded guilty to attempted battery allegedly attacked the judge after he realized things weren’t going his way.
On Wednesday, January 3, 30-year-old Deobra Redden was in a Clark County, Nevada, court for sentencing. He tried to plead his case for probation with Judge Mary Kay Holthus, saying he wasn’t “a rebellious person” and was someone “who never stops trying to do the right thing.” Still, she had other ideas. She referenced his criminal history and said it was time that he got “a taste of something else.” The next thing that happened stunned the entire courtroom.
Viral video shows Redden cursing at the judge and then leaping over the bench, Superman-style, to get to her. He ended up grabbing her hair and dragging her down before court officials pulled him off of her.
The melee injured a court martial, and he required hospitalization. Judge Hothus also received injuries when she hit her head, and doctors were monitoring her, according to The New York Times.
Prosecutors jailed Redden pending a $54,000 bail bond following the incident, and the prisoner now faces additional charges, including seven new counts of battery on a protected person, coercion with force, and extortion. The suspect has a plethora of previous convictions, including three felonies and nine misdemeanors, mainly consisting of violent offenses.
The suspect refused to return to court the following day, and the court scheduled his next appearance for January 9. The judge has returned to work following the incident. Redden will face her once again on Monday morning for his rescheduled sentencing, Chief Judge Jerry Wiese said.
