GOP Presidential Candidate Drops His Campaign

(USNewsBreak.com) – There are currently 16 people in the race to win the White House, 12 of them Republicans. With the 2024 election just over a year away, many candidates have started ramping up their campaigns with the hopes of winning the GOP primary. Recently, Robert F. Kennedy (RFK) Jr. switched to Independent and one member of the Republican Party dropped out of the race.

On Monday, October 9, former Texas Representative Will Hurd announced on X, formerly Twitter, that he was suspending his campaign. He acknowledged that his team was able to match “the accomplishments of many” others “who had significantly higher name ID and cash advantage,” but in the end, it wasn’t enough. Hurd said that dropping out is critical in order to “consolidate [the] party around one person” with the hopes of beating former President Donald Trump and current POTUS Joe Biden.

The former lawmaker says he joined the race because he wants to see the nation last several more centuries and move away from the “rematch from h*ll” that’s looking increasingly likely.

Hurd isn’t just stepping back; he’s throwing his weight behind former US Ambassador and South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, saying she’s “the best person in this race” to help address the challenges the country faces while uniting citizens at the same time.

Haley addressed Hurd’s comment and thanked him for his support. She has been, in recent months, gaining ground, thanks in part to her confident showing at the first two Republican primary debates. Trump, on the other hand, has yet to appear at one, saying he’s so far ahead in the polls that he doesn’t need to. Even FiveThirtyEight has Haley gaining strength, though she still lags considerably behind the former president. As of October 11, Trump sits at 58%, with Haley hitting just 6.3%.

Florida Governor DeSantis is second behind Trump at 12.2%, and Vivek Ramaswamy is bringing up third place at 7.6%. Hurd was only performing at 0.1%, in last place.
