Federal Charges Rock the SPLC
A federal grand jury in Montgomery, Alabama, returned an indictment charging the Southern Poverty Law Center with 11 counts of wire fraud and making false statements. The Justice Department says the SPLC secretly funneled more than $3 million in donated funds to people connected to violent extremist groups between 2014 and 2023. Those groups include the Ku Klux Klan, Aryan Nations, and the National Socialist Party of America.
The indictment also alleges the SPLC used paid informants — called “field sources” — who were actively promoting racist groups at the same time the SPLC was publicly denouncing those same groups. The charges suggest the organization may have been keeping hate alive in order to keep donor dollars flowing in. That is a stunning accusation against a group that built its entire brand on fighting racism.
Jordan Demands Answers on Capitol Hill
The House Judiciary Committee held a hearing titled “The Southern Poverty Law Center: Manufacturing Hate, Part II,” putting SPLC leaders on the hot seat. Rep. Jim Jordan led the charge, pressing the SPLC’s CEO on where donor money actually went. Jordan’s sharp questioning left SPLC representatives struggling to answer basic questions about the group’s finances and its relationship with paid informants inside hate groups.
The SPLC’s legal team deflected many questions, saying the fraud allegations “will be addressed in the middle district of Alabama” — meaning in court, not in a congressional hearing room. Democrats on the committee pushed back, calling the prosecution politically motivated. But that defense rings hollow when a federal grand jury — not a politician — returned the charges based on evidence presented by prosecutors.
Texas Joins the Probe
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton opened his own investigation into the SPLC after the federal indictment dropped. Paxton’s probe focuses on whether the SPLC misled donors about how their money was being used. Charity watchdog groups have also raised red flags. CharityWatch noted that the federal charges raise serious questions for anyone who has donated to the SPLC, since donors gave money to fight hate — not fund it.
The SPLC's "hate group" labels have repeatedly led to organizations losing corporate sponsorships, banking access, and donor funds. Example: Alliance Defending Freedom was dropped from Amazon Smile after the SPLC designation. Many conservative and faith-based groups faced similar…

For years, the SPLC wielded enormous power by labeling conservative and Christian organizations as “hate groups.” Those labels cost targeted groups corporate sponsors and banking relationships. Now the tables have turned. The organization that built a brand — and a massive fundraising machine — on calling out others faces criminal charges alleging it secretly bankrolled the very evil it claimed to oppose. Donors and lawmakers deserve full answers, and the courts will have to deliver them.
