Bodum is recalling 5.9 million glass French presses because stirring with a metal spoon can damage the carafe so it later breaks and spills hot coffee.

Story Highlights

  • The recall covers about 5.9 million Bodum 8-cup and 12-cup French presses with replaceable glass carafes.
  • There were 70 reports of carafes breaking during use, including 48 reports of burns.
  • The fix is a free plastic stirring spoon and a warning label, not a refund or a new press.
  • Owners are told to stop stirring with metal spoons right away and to stop using any cracked carafe.

Recall Scope and Safety Hazard

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the federal agency that watches over the safety of household goods, announced the recall with Bodum USA on Thursday, October 29. The agency says a damaged or cracked glass carafe “can break unexpectedly during use,” which can cause serious burns from hot liquid. The presses were sold in the United States from 1974 through October 2026.

The trouble starts with the spoon. Stirring coffee with a metal spoon or other metal tool can nick or weaken the glass, officials said. The damage may not show at first, but the carafe can then break during a later use. The agency has 70 reports of carafes breaking while in use, and 48 of those include burns.

Company Statement and Consumer Instructions

Bodum called the action a voluntary recall done in cooperation with the agency. In its statement, the company said “the rate of reported incidents involving carafe breakage during use is extremely low,” but added that it takes “any reports of injury extremely seriously.” Bodum said it warns against using metal spoons to stir coffee in the glass carafe, “which can damage the glass and lead to breakage during use.”

Owners are told to stop using metal utensils in the glass carafes right away and not to use a carafe that is cracked or damaged. Bodum will send a free plastic stirring spoon and an extra warning label that reminds users not to put metal in the glass. There are no refunds and no replacement presses. Owners can ask for the free kit at bodumfrenchpressrecall.expertinquiry.com or by calling 888-879-8213, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time, Monday through Friday.

Models Affected and Where They Were Sold

The recall covers 8-cup and 12-cup presses with replaceable glass carafes from eight Bodum lines: Bistro, Brazil, Caffettiera, Chambord, Crema, Java, Jesper and Kenya. They sold for about $15 to $65 at Target, Walmart, coffee and home goods stores across the country, Amazon, Bodum’s own website and other online stores. The presses were made in Portugal and Thailand.

To tell if you own one, look for the Bodum name. On most affected models it appears on the frame and the inner lid, and it is etched on the glass carafe along with product warnings. The full government recall notice has photos of each model. If yours matches, put the metal spoon away and send for the free kit.

How Recalls Work and Why This One Matters

Most product recalls in this country are voluntary deals between a company and the safety agency rather than court fights. A voluntary recall does not mean every unit is broken. It means the company and the agency agreed on a step to cut the risk. Here that step is simple: keep metal out of the glass. A French press sits in millions of kitchens, so a small change in habit can head off a painful burn.
