Authorities Say Thief Stole Over 50 Pistols in California

(USNewsBreak.com) – A thief allegedly burglarized one store in Sacramento in the early morning hours of Monday, July 24, and what he is accused of stealing is causing great concern.

According to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, someone broke into a gun shop in Newcastle around 4 a.m. They started drilling a hole into the shop around 1:20 a.m. and gained entry a few hours later. The suspect, captured on film by security cameras, allegedly took more than 50 handguns from the shop, placed them inside duffle bags, and removed them from the shop. The person did not take any ammunition.

While the gun shop owner, Jaimie Kuntz, says there are 17 cameras inside, police have not released a description of the suspect or the vehicle they were driving at this time. The suspect reportedly tried to conceal the crime by spray painting over the lens of a surveillance camera. However, Kuntz noted they only covered one out of many, and that one wasn’t working.

Kuntz arrived on the scene shortly after receiving a call around 4 a.m. that someone had breached the store. The owner immediately began taking inventory and contacted multiple law enforcement agencies. Kuntz also contracted someone to repair the wall and is taking steps to ensure that nothing like this happens again.

Along with the local sheriff’s office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is now involved in the investigation, considering the nature of the crime. Authorities expect the probe to be arduous, especially considering there are no witnesses and the thief struck in the middle of the night.

Authorities added the guns, which have serial numbers, to a registry, meaning law enforcement can trace the firearms back to the theft if someone uses them in a crime. The guns had a total estimated value of around $40,000.
