McConnell Gives His Endorsement To Trump

(USNewsBreak.com) – In recent years, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and former President Donald Trump have had their disagreements. Both have criticized the other. Yet, that hasn’t stopped the senator from throwing his support behind Trump as he seeks to lead the country once again.

On Wednesday, March 6, following the results of Super Tuesday, McConnell endorsed Trump for president. In a statement, he made it clear that “it should come as no surprise” he would support the former president in his bid for the Oval Office. However, McConnell has also been known to be critical of Trump in the past, previously blaming him for inciting the January 6, 2021 riots. Following the impeachment trial, McConnell made it clear that he believed the former president was “practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of that day.” That led Trump to mock him.

However, McConnell seems to have put their differences aside. He also noted in his statement that the pair worked together well during his first term “to accomplish great things for the American people.”

For his part, McConnell plans to step down as Senate Republican leader in November, saying he intends to finish his term, which ends in 2027. He has seemed to have health issues lately, missing several weeks of work due to a bad fall. The senator also froze twice in front of a live video feed, leading some to question whether he was healthy enough to serve.

With former US Ambassador Nikki Haley dropping out of the race, the Republican nomination is largely expected to go to Trump. Some of her former supporters have launched an initiative to court votes for President Joe Biden, who will face off against Trump in a repeat of the 2020 election season unless something drastic happens. However, Haley has not endorsed anyone.
