(USNewsBreak.com) – The Middle East has been a hotbed of activity since Hamas attacked Israel, killing more than 1,200 people. Since then, Yemen’s Houthi rebels have also taken aim at vessels in the Red Sea, and US troops are coming under fire at various bases in the region. Israel is also battling — albeit in limited capacity — Iranian-linked factions in Syria and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Multiple protests have broken out in the US, where participants have called for a ceasefire. One US representative is now calling for an investigation.
Pelosi Seeking Probe
The Israel-Hamas war is sowing some serious division, with protestors on both sides of the issue taking to the streets in favor of the Jewish state or Palestinians. However, former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has decided that the FBI should get involved and investigate Russia’s potential involvement with or funding of protestors.
Pelosi appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday, January 28, and spoke with host Dana Bash. The topic of the protests came up, particularly regarding those calling for a ceasefire, and Pelosi said that the message was one that Putin would push. She acknowledged that some of the gatherings were “spontaneous and organic and sincere” but also suggested Russia might be funding others. When Bash asked the former Speaker if she thought they were plants, Pelosi denied such a line of thought but “think[s] some financing should be investigated.” She wants the FBI to be the one to do it. She offered up these comments without any solid evidence of involvement by Russia or its President, Vladimir Putin, other than noting the protestors’ ceasefire message is one he would push.
Pelosi also brought up the suffering of “women and children,” saying, “People don’t have a place to go [in Gaza], so let’s address that.”
Muslim Group Calls Out Pelosi
The Council on American-Islamic Relations, a US Muslim group, slammed Pelosi for her comments, saying they were nothing more than “unsubstantiated smears” that dehumanized Palestinians.
Additionally, it’s the first time a prominent lawmaker has tried to make such a connection, according to Reuters.
Since Israel launched its full-scale response to the Hamas attack with the intent of eradicating Hamas, protests with people demanding a ceasefire have cropped up across the United States. Some have accused the Jewish State of genocide. The military response has displaced more than two million civilians, and tens of thousands of Palestinians have died or received life-altering injuries.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has staunchly opposed any ceasefire calls or the idea of a two-state solution.
