(USNewsBreak.com) – In the face of Hamas’ surprise attack on Israel in October, tensions have run high in the Middle East. In the aftermath, US troops stationed in Iraq and Syria have come under an increasing number of assaults. Additionally, the US has deployed multiple ships to the Red Sea to support Israel in light of the war. Recently, the US Navy shot down a drone and confirmed Houthis launched the unmanned craft from Yemen.
The incident occurred while the USS Carney, a Navy destroyer, sailed close to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait on Wednesday, November 29, while escorting an oiler ship and one other US vessel carrying military equipment. The Navy shot the drone down as a precautionary measure, stating “its intentions are not known” at this time, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said while speaking with Fox News Digital.
This incident wasn’t an isolated encounter. US ships have had several drone confrontations recently. The day prior, another Iranian drone came within 4,500 feet of the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, an aircraft carrier, violating established safety precautions that mandate UAVs stay at least 10 nautical miles from ships. At the time, the aircraft carrier was conducting flight operations in the Arabian Gulf. Eventually, the drone turned away after multiple warnings. Neither the USS Carney nor the Dwight D. Eisenhower received any damage, and the Navy reported no crew injuries aboard either vessel.
It’s not just ships under attack, either. Troops stationed on bases in Iraq and Syria have come under fire from rockets and drones. The latest incident occurred overnight on November 30. The rocket came from Iranian-backed groups and targeted Mission Support Site Euphrates in Syria. Fortunately, the attack didn’t hurt or kill anybody.
VOA reported that since October 17, there have been at least 74 attacks on US and coalition troops in the Middle East. The US military disrupted most, or the attacks failed to reach their targets.
