(USNewsBreak.com) – The Constitution outlines the supreme law of the United States that every person and law within our borders must fall under. Since its signing in 1787, it has been amended 27 times as American society changed and adapted to the demands of its time. While each change is important, a few stand out more than others.
The First Amendment Delivers Five Rights to the People
The first amendment of the Bill of Rights ensures that Congress cannot infringe on American’s free exercise of religion or the freedom of speech and press. In addition, it protects our right to petition the government and peaceably assemble.
Each of these rights leaves the power in the hands of everyday citizens to let their voices and opinions be heard at all levels of government.
The Second Amendment Protects Our Right to Keep and Bear Arms
When America was founded, owning a gun was critical to defending one’s family, town, and even state against British forces. Out of this, the Second Amendment was born. It secures “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms.”
The right of every American to protect themselves from whatever adversary is a beautiful gift written into the Constitution.
The Fifth Amendment Holds Fast to Life and Liberty
The fifth amendment, in addition to detailing how legal proceedings should go, states that “no person shall..be deprived of life, liberty, or property.” This allows citizens to have confidence in their freedoms and that the government cannot infringe on their life without due process.
The Ninth and Tenth Amendments Secure Numerous Unspoken Rights
As government grows, it naturally begins to regulate more aspects of society. Thankfully, our Founding Fathers knew this and wrote the ninth and tenth amendments. These ensure that powers not explicitly given to the Federal government are held by the states and their people and that rights not explicitly mentioned in the Constitution are still held by the people as well.
While one can easily argue each amendment to our Constitution has played a critical part in our history at various points in time, these amendments could be considered some of the most important. Every American should, however, take the time to read the full Constitution in order to see which amendments are most important to them.
