Ohio Secretary of State Joins Senate Race

(USNewsBreak.com) – For decades, political analysts considered Ohio a swing state, though some called that status into question during the 2016 election. Presidential candidates between 1960 and 2020 didn’t win without Ohio’s electoral votes, but that changed in the last election. Now, many pundits consider it a solid “Red” state, making the upcoming senate race all the more important. The GOP is trying to oust Senator Sherrod Brown (D), and another candidate has just joined the fray.

On Monday, Frank LaRose, Ohio’s Republican Secretary of State, announced he’s throwing his hat in the ring and making a Senate run. He has over a decade of political experience in the state, having served as a state senator from 2011 to 2019. Before that, he served in the Army as a Green Beret. LaRose’s campaign website outlines issues concerning him, which include education, crime and safety, economy, national security, fiscal responsibility, and life and health. He pointed to his three daughters as inspiration for his run, saying he’s “not willing to sit quietly while the woke left tries to cancel the American dream,” per CBS News.

LaRose’s entry into the Senate race could be messy. Two other notable GOP candidates have already declared: State Senator Matt Dolan (R-Chagrin Falls) and Cleveland business owner Bernie Moreno, who seems to have former President Donald Trump’s backing. LaRose is at a disadvantage when it comes to funding, as both Dolan, whose family owns the Cleveland MLB team, and Moreno have the means to fund themselves. In fact, Dolan has already sunk $4 million of his own money into his campaign.

The secretary of state will need to light a fire under his campaign, so to speak, if he wants to catch up to his competition — on both sides of the aisle. Brown has already raised $5 million in the last quarter alone. Then, there are the attack ads, which Moreno wasted no time in posting. It will be interesting to see how the race plays out.
