Kevin McCarthy Suggests Possible Impeachment Inquiry

( – Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, was under investigation when the president took office in January 2021. US Attorney David Weiss has been overseeing the probe since it began in 2018. The commander in chief went against typical protocol and chose not to remove Weiss, so he could finish the investigation.

On June 20, the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Delaware charged the younger Biden with two misdemeanor tax offenses, to which the First Son has agreed to plead guilty. He was also charged with a felony firearm offense, but that count is likely to be dropped. Now, two whistleblowers have come forward alleging that the Department of Justice (DOJ) interfered in the investigation with the intention of protecting Hunter, and it’s led the top House Republican to demand answers.

The Allegations

The allegations come from two IRS whistleblowers. Gary Shapley, a supervisory agent, and another unnamed individual claim that Weiss had wanted to bring federal charges against Hunter Biden and asked AG Garland to appoint him as a special counsel. He reportedly made the comment in front of six witnesses.

Obtaining that status would’ve given the US attorney the authority to file not only state charges, but also federal ones in California and Washington, DC. The whistleblowers claim US attorneys Matthew Graves and Martin Estrada denied this request.

Shapley acknowledged that the probe didn’t turn up any connections to President Joe Biden, despite claims that investigators skirted around those types of questions.

Impeachment Pending?

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is calling for Weiss to answer questions about the allegations in front of the House Judiciary Committee. He went on to say if the claims prove true, it would “be a significant part of a larger impeachment inquiry into” Attorney General Merrick Garland and his “weaponization of the DOJ.”

On Friday, June 23, AG Garland denied that the DOJ hindered Weiss. He further said that the US attorney never requested the special counsel appointment, and he has the “complete authority to make all decisions on his own,” per The Associated Press. Should he agree to testify, Garland said the DOJ would not object.

This isn’t the first time the House, led by Speaker McCarthy, has called for the impeachment of a Biden Administration official. They have been threatening Alejandro Mayorkas, the Homeland Security Secretary, for failures at the southern border, and Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) has tried to move toward impeaching President Biden.
